Mrs Lerato Samy is an HPCSA Registered Trauma Counselor (PRC 0020796) BHF Independent Practice Number (0831417). She completed her 720 hour internship in 2010 and obtained her BPsych Honours degree in 2011 from Midrand Graduate Institute. She obtained her first Masters degree in Political Studies with a focus on Human Rights and Development from The University of Witwatersrand in 2017. She obtained her second Masters Degree in Social Development with a focus on Social Policy, Programme Design and Management also from The University of Witwatersrand in 2019.
Lerato has done extensive psychological work with various organisations such as The Teddy Bear Clinic for sexually abused children. She worked at The Phelophepha Health Train where she provided free counselling services to less privileged communities in the Eastern Cape. Lerato worked at both Crescent and Cluny Farms, homes for mentally disadvantaged citizens where she co-facilitated psycho-social programmes. She co-facilitated conflict resolution and anger management psycho-social workshops at the Leeuwkop Correctional Services for inmates. She worked at Midrand Police Station victim empowerment unit where she provided debriefing sessions for victims of crime. She is currently employed by the Government as a Career Advisor and Practitioner and works with the Safe Haven Village Orphanage Home.
In her capacity as a psychological practitioner, she provides short-term, supportive counselling, psychological interventions, general primary screening, basic psychological assessments that require the interpretation of psychological functions and psycho-education services aiming at enhancing personal functioning of children, adults and families in education, work and communities. Lerato is a qualified 16 PF Personality Test Administrator.
As a trauma counselor, she applies a victim-cantered approach in her therapy sessions and brings a diversity of specialized service skills, tools, social resources, cultural competence, and a trauma-informed perspective. Lerato provides psychological services that are accessible to the diverse South African population and firmly believes that the psychological well-being of an individual, is the cornerstone of a healthy community.
Areas of primary intervention and prevention: trauma, family difficulties, work-challenges, child sexual abuse, play therapy, life changes, loss/grief, marital/couples therapy, relationships, self-development, career development and assessment.
